A groundbreaking paper was published back in 2011, written by two of our most talented colleagues; Åke Olbert and David Hellerström. The study behind the report remains the most ambitious quantitative work done, aimed at improving flight and duty time limits for airline crew. The findings are both shocking and spot-on, and the recommendations remain highly relevant today.
Next time our industry embarks upon improving flight and duty time limits, we can only hope it will be a fact-based quantitative approach like this, done using real crew schedules, rather than guesswork on how the science will play out in meeting reality.
Even if you read the paper back then, perhaps this is the perfect time for a refresher? It will be time well-spent, and also gives ample preparation for the even more ambitious sequel…[cliff-hanger intended]
