We’ve arrived at the new chapter of this series quantifying the effectiveness of regulatory rules: Unleashing Hidden Potential. Here, we quantify the remaining untapped opportunities within the EASA FTLs if we were to augment flights in an optimal way—strategically reinforcing the flights most in need of extra pilots. Currently, the augmentation requirements in the rules are necessarily simplified, falling short of fully using what we know about human physiology and cognitive performance from scientific research.
In Chapter 4, we established that the current EASA rules for long haul operation, compared to the previous rules, reduced fatigue risk by 7.8% but did so at the cost of a 7% efficiency drop. But what if we fully aligned the EASA FTLs with science? How much risk reduction or efficiency gain could be unlocked?
