The current regulations mandate operators to integrate scientific principles into their operational framework. Aligning scientific insights with operational experience and evidence-based rostering principles necessitates decisions on the practical quantification of fatigue risk. While various methods can be employed for this purpose, regulators have yet to provide detailed guidance on this level.
In this document, we present what Jeppesen, along with many operators, deems as the best practice for quantifying fatigue risk. This recommended approach serves as a practical guide for making informed crew scheduling decisions, guiding the rostering process to reduced overall risk exposure but in balance with other objectives. The proposed metric also enables benchmarking between operators, with a few typical ranges provided at the end of the document.
