With millions of active users and over 400 million nights analyzed in more than 150 countries, Sleep Cycle is the leading sleep tracker application and one of the most widely used sleep solutions worldwide to improve sleep health. Since June 2020, Sleep Cycle is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm under the ticker SLEEP.
The Sleep Cycle mission is to improve global health by empowering people to sleep better. We met up with Carl Johan Hederoth, CEO at Sleep Cycle, for a chat about application to the field of aviation:
Carl Johan, ‘improving global health’ - a too ambitious goal?
-Sleep is closely connected to our health and overall wellbeing. Everything we do during the day has the potential to affect our sleep, and how we sleep during the night greatly affects how we perform during the day. So, to us, improving sleep is all about improving health. The two are so closely connected. Although it may seem an overly ambitious goal, what it encompasses is a given if we want to see real change in the way people value sleep health. For over a decade, with over 400 billion nights tracked, Sleep Cycle has helped improve millions of users sleep globally, and as a result their overall health. We’re on a great track and sleep awareness is growing worldwide, thanks to products like ours spreading better understanding of cause and effect, and more importantly providing insights and coaching that helps improve sleep first-hand. Can you tell us more about the Sleep Cycle app itself?
-Sure. Sleep Cycle was first launched back in 2009 and quickly became a hit in the Apple Appstore. After also being launched on Google Play, Google Wear, Apple Watch, and Samsung GalaxyWear4, it is now the most-used sleep tracking solution in the world. Our technology has evolved from the use of the accelerometer for sleep tracking, to the launch of our patented sound analysis and implementation of machine learning in our tracking and analysis of sleep data. The evolvement creates an even more personalized user journey, with focus on individual sleep patterns and learnings. Sleep Cycle offers an extensive library of music, meditations and stories, all of which help you fall asleep more easily. It provides you with an analysis of your sleep, correlate its findings with your habits, external factors, and daily activities to help you figure out the good and bad influences on your sleep. Sleep Cycle wakes you up when you’re in your lightest sleep phase. Waking up in light sleep helps you feel rested and recovered. The results of the sleep analysis are presented as easy-to-understand insights and trends, providing tailored guidance on how you can change your routine and improve your sleep. What would you say the main benefits are for airline crew using Sleep Cycle?
-Pilots and cabin crew often have irregular work hours - plus: they’re exposed to jetlag effects crossing over many time zones. This makes it particularly challenging for them to consistently convert enough of their time off into quality sleep restoring their cognitive functions. Tracking their sleep durations and quality over time, and maximising the value of sleep and powernaps, therefore becomes especially important for them. This is where Sleep Cycle comes in, adding self-awareness and practical functionality to assist them to improve. All of which in turn will also contribute to flight safety reducing crew fatigue. You’ve gathered a lot of detailed sleep data from your users. How will you build on that going forward?
-The potential is endless. Firstly, we can use it to improve sleep analysis for users, generating more insights and developing functionality that will provide an even greater understanding of what affects sleep health and how sleep can be continuously improved, on a personal and global level. Secondly, Sleep Cycle’s database is one of the most comprehensive sources for sleep statistics in the world, and frequently contributes to sleep research by collaborating with renowned universities and research facilities worldwide. The field in general is learning a lot right now and I believe Sleep Cycle is helping out ramping up the speed even further.
Thank you Carl Johan, nice talking to you!
