2021 marks exactly thirty years since we first engaged in crew planning optimization together with SAS and Lufthansa. It also marks thirty years for a series of unique architectural decisions which we later informally baptized the Avocado.
The FRM News Flash will commemorate this 30-year anniversary with a series of articles taking you through the major milestones and key decisons that led up to what is today, indisputably, the leading solution for planning airline crew and used by some 80+ operators world-wide. Our optimizers are often used on a daily basis for solving a wide range of challenging planning problems and producing what-if scenarios supporting decision making. But how come it 'just works' year after year for these operators, despite significant changes to their networks, rules and the structure of their optimization problems?
We aim to answer this, and tell the story behind it, by tracking down and interviewing some of the key people who have been involved over the years to share their reflections. Stay tuned for the next issue when we start this trip down memory lane with Part 1: The Legacy.
